When parents feel triggered: a 3-step approach to remain calm
15/04/2024Mindful Parenting Workshop: back by popular demand!
06/05/2024Teaching children and teens healthy and effective calming and self-regulation skills from an early age is key.
Mindfulness, meditation, and breathing practices are incredibly powerful and effective, especially when needing to release anger/frustration or feeling dysregulated. Children usually love using these practices and they are a playful way to help everyone calm down.
Below is a very simple and fun practice (also honouring the Year of the Dragon) for those moments when our children (or us) feel like we are about to explode.
A few rounds of dragon breath help us to calm quickly. The long exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) and also ensures we are taking a deep breath in which helps us to work through emotions. Practice dragon breathing with children when they are calm, so that they know how to use this practice during moments of anger. Children adore dragons, so give it a go!
As a fun family activity: Create a dragon family and breathe together!
